AI Visibility Score and Share of Voice: Methodology FAQ

Last updated: 22 Oct 2026 · By OptimizeGEO Team

An AI visibility score measures how often AI engines name your brand across a fixed set of buyer prompts. AI share of voice measures how much of that attention you hold compared with your competitors. This FAQ explains how OptimizeGEO calculates both, why the numbers move, and how to compare tools before you buy. The stakes are rising: Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would fall 25% by 2026 as people turn to AI chatbots and virtual agents.

Methodology matters because AI answers aren't stable. In a SparkToro and Gumshoe study reported in January 2026, about 600 volunteers ran 12 identical prompts nearly 3,000 times. ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI returned the same list of brands less than once in 100 runs. A single check tells you very little. A defined method tells you a lot.

    Key Takeaways

    • Visibility averages across every answer, including those that don't name you, so scores are often small.
    • Share of voice is relative: adding competitors can lower it even when you improve.
    • Report branded and non-branded prompts separately, and India and the USA separately.
    • Compare tools on method, prompt volume and engines, not on headline scores.

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score is the average visibility your brand earns across every AI answer in a tracking period, with answers that don't name you counted as zero. OptimizeGEO scores each answer, then divides the total by all answers collected, not just the ones that mention you. That's why scores in competitive categories are often single-digit percentages. A low number can still represent real progress, so always read the trend, not the absolute figure.

Our guide to the AI visibility score covers benchmark ranges and how to improve the score.

Why branded and non-branded prompts must be reported separately

A branded prompt names your brand, such as "What is OptimizeGEO?". A non-branded prompt doesn't, such as "Which tools track AI share of voice?". Engines tend to repeat a brand name that appears in the question, so branded prompts make visibility look far higher than it is.

Non-branded prompts are where buyers discover you, so treat that number as your headline metric. Report the branded figure separately as a check on accuracy.

    Why one run isn't enough

Because answers vary so much, run each prompt several times per period and average the results. In OptimizeGEO's tracking, each prompt runs repeatedly across engines and regions. That way, a single unusual answer can't swing the score.

You measure AI share of voice by dividing the number of answers that name your brand by the number of answers that name any tracked brand, across the same prompts, engines and period. The figure depends on which competitors you track. In OptimizeGEO's tracking of its own category, brand mentions per run grew 32% in India and 28% in the USA in five weeks (4 Aug–9 Sep 2026). That growth alone pushes every brand's share down. Our guide to AI share of voice explains the metric in more depth.

Why share of voice can fall while you improve

Share of voice is a ratio. If the category grows faster than you do, or you add competitors to the tracked list, your share falls even when more answers name you. That's a denominator change, not a performance drop.

The fix is to lock your competitor list and prompt set for each reporting period. Then log every change with a date, so month-on-month numbers stay comparable.

    Which competitors should you track?

Track the brands buyers actually compare you with, usually 10–25. Adding large incumbents changes the denominator immediately. Add them deliberately, at the start of a quarter, and restate the baseline the day you do.

What is the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?

An AI mention means your brand is named in an AI answer. An AI citation means your page is linked as a source. The two measure different outcomes and should never be swapped. In OptimizeGEO's tracking of 256,917 citations across 173 prompts and five engines (4 Aug–9 Sep 2026), engines cited one vendor's page but named a different brand in 23% of prompt-page pairs.

    What drives citations

Most citations go to sources you don't own. Muck Rack's Generative Pulse study of more than 25 million links (May 2026) found earned media made up 84% of the sources ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cited, with paid content at 0.3%. Muck Rack co-founder and CEO Greg Galant said the third edition of the study confirmed the same pattern: AI systems trust earned media.

Brand mentions matter more than links. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (May 2025) found branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with visibility in Google AI Overviews, against 0.218 for backlinks.

    Where community sources fit

Community platforms carry real weight. In OptimizeGEO's tracking of 283,767 citations across 10,308 domains (India and USA, 19 Jun–31 Aug 2026), Reddit earned 3,604 citations, more than all review sites and directories combined (1,523). Independent sites and blogs earned 52.1% of category citations.

How often should you measure, and how do you report by market?

Measure weekly, and report each engine and market separately. Engines behave differently: in OptimizeGEO's tracking (4 Aug–9 Sep 2026), OpenAI's engine produced about 15,500 category mentions per region, 2.4× any other engine. Gemini issued 4,743 citations to youtube.com on the same questions where OpenAI's engine issued one. A blended score hides those differences.

Report India and the USA separately

Buyers phrase questions differently by market, and engines answer differently. Category growth also differs, as the 32% versus 28% figures above show. Our guide to multi-country AI visibility tracking explains how to set up market-level prompt sets.

Keep the method frozen within a period

Change the prompt set, the competitor list or the engines only at the start of a reporting period, and log each change. Otherwise you can't tell a real gain from a change in what you measure. Our prompt intelligence methodology explains how prompt sets are built.

Which tools measure AI visibility and share of voice?

OptimizeGEO measures AI visibility and share of voice, then turns gaps into prioritized fixes through its Recommendations Agent and Execution Agents. Its Standard plan costs $499 a month and tracks 75 prompts and 25 competitors, according to OptimizeGEO's pricing page (checked 22 Oct 2026). Other tools suit teams that only need monitoring, or that already use an SEO suite.

Vendor details were checked on 13–22 Oct 2026, and prices change often. Before you compare headline scores, ask each vendor how they define visibility and share of voice. The same brand can score very differently under different formulas. For full reviews, see our list of the best AI visibility tracking tools.

How do you turn the measurement into results?

Measurement pays off when it drives weekly fixes. Business Intelligence Group tripled its AI visibility score, from 25% to 75%. It removed low-quality auto-generated pages, added an llms.txt file, rewrote key pages and tracked AI answers weekly. Its monthly AI traffic grew 151% between January and October 2025 (BIG case study).

Other platforms tell you where your brand appears. OptimizeGEO helps you win the answers that matter to growth.

    FAQ

How is an AI visibility score different from a Google ranking? A ranking is a position in a list of links. An AI visibility score is an average across many AI answers, so it reflects how often you're named, not where you rank.

Why does my share of voice differ between tools? Tools use different prompts, engines, competitor lists and formulas. Compare trends within one tool, not absolute numbers across tools.

How many prompts should I track? Start with 50–100 per market, covering the full buying journey. Keep branded and non-branded prompts separate.

Should mentions and citations be reported together? No. A mention shows you were named. A citation shows your page was used as a source. Report both, and watch for pages that are cited while a competitor is named.

How often should I restate my baseline? Whenever the prompt set, competitor list or engine mix changes. Record the old and new figures for that period so the trend stays readable.

    Conclusion

AI visibility and share of voice are only as good as the method behind them. Average across all answers, separate branded from non-branded prompts, freeze your inputs within a period, and report each engine and market on its own.
